I wanted to take the ideas running through my Automation of Listening piece and apply them to Spotify's user interface. I recorded a piece of acoustic music reminiscent of Spotify's Acoustic Chill playlist: as well as this, I recorded some discordant guitar noise, a spoken-word monologue, and some ambient recording. The resultant audio piece, 'Permanent Present', is designed to be an evolving, interactive experience, confronting the passive, uncritical listening dictated by Spotify.
